Popular Imperialism, Imperialism patrician: Catalonia and the English colonialism (1869-1896)
By Martin Rodrigo (UPF)
In the second half of the nineteenth century Barcelona became the capital of English colonialism. In the era of imperialism, the main companies and economic initiatives that seek to take advantage of the English empire island (both Cuba, like Puerto Rico, the Philippines and English Guinea) were Catalan companies such as Transatlantic Company, Banco Hispano Colonial and General Tobacco Company of the Philippines. But the Catalan capital was also a great stage show for the imperialism of a mass popular that he was proud of the English imperial side in both the Caribbean Sea to Africa or China.
